A stock market index is a cumulative value produced by incorporating several stocks and various investment tools together and expressing their total values against a pedestal value from a specific date. Stock market indexes are intended to represent an accurate picture of the entire stock market and thus track changes of the market over time.
An index is classified according to the procedure used to determine its price, and can be of the following types: — Price weighted Index — Capitalization Weighted Index — Modified Capitalization Weighted Index (Hybrid) Index values are suitable for investors to track changes in market values over extended periods of time. For example, the widely used measure and 500 Index of Poor (S&P) is computed by amalgamating 500 large-cap US stocks together into one index value. Investors can track changes in the value of index over time and utilize it as a benchmark against which to relate their own portfolio returns. In a cost weighted index such as Dow Jones Industrial Average and the NYSE ARCA Tech 100 Index, the expense of each component stock is the sole consideration when determining the value of the index. Thus, price relocation of even a discrete stock will actively affect the value of the index. In contrasting, a capitalization-weighted index such as the Hang Seng Index takes into account the size of the company. Therefore, a comparatively meager shift in the price of a broad company will strongly alter the index. In a market-share weighted index, cost is weighted depending on the number of shares, rather than their aggregate values. The Alerian MLP Index is a union of the 50 most respected energy master limited partnerships designed by S&P using a float-adjusted market capitalization methodology. The index is dispersed by the NYSE real-time on a price return base (NYSE: AMZ). The corresponding aggregate return index is calculated and distributed everyday through ticker AMZX. More than 14 years of historical index data on both a price and complete return foundation is ready starting on December 29, 1995. Alerian also publishes relevant essential data points such as index component weightings, total sector market capitalization, and dividend yield. Indexes are kept up to date by a system known as rebalancing where needy performers are replaced by fresh entrants. In the Alerian MLP indexes, index rebalancing falls into two groups: quarterly rebalancing and particular rebalancing. In the occurrence that the chief US exchanges are closed on the third Friday of March, June, September, or December, the rebalancing will take place after market close on the promptly earlier trading day.
